1861 F27 (Gouby H+f; Freeman 5+F) (R18)
In the 2003 edition of his book “The Early British Bronze ‘Bun’ Pennies 1860 to 1865 and their Varieties”, John Jerrams’ census (up to September 2001) recorded 1 specimen of this incredibly rare die-pairing.
Example 1
Thought to be the specimen that suggested to Michael Freeman that this very rare die pairing actually existed. Very worn, but shows some of the key identifiers of obverse 5 (clear area below Victoria’s bust) and reverse F (thicker helmet plume closer to Britannia’s neck plus small rock to the left of the shield) – compare it with examples 3 and 4
