Unrecorded 1922 Proof or Specimen (Gouby C+d; Freeman 3+C)
Although Freeman inaccurately described the very rare F192A (see elsewhere on this site) as being the die pairing 3+C, the actual die pairing of 3+C does exist but was unrecorded by either Freeman or Gouby and presumably had not been encountered by either of these gentlemen. This specimen or proof coin has the unusual die pairing of the normal 1922 obverse and the reverse used on pennies dated from 1927 onwards. Thought to be part of a set of coins (1924 farthing, 1924 halfpenny, 1922 penny, 1924 threepence, 1924 sixpence, 1924 shilling, 1924 florin and 1924 halfcrown) produced as examples of the Royal Mint’s capabilities, and originally owned by the Pretoria Mint in South Africa, only 2 sets are known with one set being sold by Heritage Auction Galleries in 2004 described as ‘George V Satin Finish Specimen “set” 1924 and 1922’ and the other set now dispersed.
