BP1862J (Gouby J+g; Freeman 6+G) – VIGTORIA (R19)
Note: the C in VICTORIA appears as a G, possibly through a botched attempt to repair the G of REG (which, on the incuse die, would be on the left hand side, opposite to the C of VICTORIA) – see Michael Gouby’s update to his book on the Victorian Bronze Penny.
You would think that this must have been blindingly obvious on a newly struck coin but this variety was only relatively recently discovered/recorded and so I assume that the error was spotted very quickly at the Mint before many specimens reached circulation.
