1862 F41 (Gouby J+g); Freeman 6+G) – small date numerals (R17)
This variety was struck with a die containing smaller date numerals, possibly from a halfpenny punch.
normal date numerals smaller date numerals
Note: Freeman rates the rarity of this variety at R18 (6-15 specimens) and Gouby states that there are 15 known specimens but I have already gathered over 40 examples on this page and so I would rate the rarity as R17 and possibly even R16.
In the 2003 edition of his book “The Early British Bronze ‘Bun’ Pennies 1860 to 1865 and their Varieties”, John Jerrams’ census (up to September 2001) recorded 14 specimens.
